THE PURE GOODNESS OF THE DIVINE COW
People who live in close proximity with cows, can observe their character and appreciate the magnanimous, beautiful and intelligent nature of this gentle, humble and docile creature addressed as Gomaatha. The most ancient and sacred scriptures of Hinduism - Vedas refer to cow as an embodiment of various Gods. The Sanskrit term Gau is a synonym for Earth. In the Rig Veda, Rishi Bharadwaja, the most ancient Vedic seer sings praises on the virtues of a cow. The fourth Veda – Athava Veda recognises cow as the earthy form of Lord Vishnu. The cow is gifted with natural powers of the universe and it passes on these energies through its by products like milk, cow dung and cow urine.
According to puranic literature, the celestial cow Kamadhenu emerged from the churning of the ocean of milk (Samudhramathanam) by Gods and demons. Kamadhenu cow was presented to the seven sages and finally came to Sage Vasistha, the guru of Lord Rama. It is said that every part of cow symbolises a divine aspect. Legs symbolise four vedas namely Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharvana. Lord Brahma and Vishnu reside in the horns. The holy River Yamuna resides in cow dung, face symbolises sun and moon and rest of the gods reside in the end of the tail. Circumambulating the cow is equivalent to visiting all the holy places.

One who donates cows is said to overcome every calamity. At the time of Grihapravesha (House warming ceremony) a cow along with calf are made to enter the house, first. This signifies that Goddess Mahalakshmi enters the house. Bringing cow inside the house during this occasion is considered auspicious and is said to bring prosperity, happiness and fulfilment of wishes.
The cow provides four products for human use – Godugdha (Milk), Goghrita (Ghee), Gomutra (Cow urine) and Gomaya (Cowdung). Cow’s milk consists of carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. It builds our body’s resistance. When the ghee made from cow’s milk is used in Yajna, it purifies the air around. Ghee is also used in various Ayurvedic formulations for effective remedy from ailments. Cow urine has high levels of anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties and is useful for immune deficiency diseases. Cowdung prevents radiation and keeps the environment pure. When one spoon of ghee is poured on cowdung during homas, it produces pure air and removes pollution. Cowdung is mixed with water and sprayed before the houses to keep warm in winter and cool during summers. It also keeps flies and mosquitoes away acting as a natural repellent. Cowdung and cow urine have been used in farming for sustainable agriculture. It increases the fertility as the phosphorus content from the cow urine enriches the soil.

The chemical composition of cow urine includes:
Nitrogen (clears blood abnormalities), sulphur (cleanses blood), ammonia, copper, phosphate, sodium, potassium, manganese, carbolic acid, calcium, vitamins A, B, C, D , E, lactose, enzymes. All of these help in maintaining the balance in production of red blood cells, haemoglobin, remove stones from urinary tract, strengthen bones and increase immunity levels. What was formulated by Ayurveda since centuries, is proven later by scientific methods. CSIR, the premier research body gathered evidence that cow’s urine contains antioxidants to prevent cancer.
